Walthros: Renewal Announcement

Follow the latest updates on Patreon and Twitter!

It's time to go back to where it all began. Renewal is a full remake/reimagining of the original Walthros and is intended for release in 2022, the 20th anniversary of the DOS release of the original title. This new title will take the characters and themes of the original game and give them a new twist, introducing a world that's both familiar and new to players who enjoyed the original game. This is a story intended for both newcomers and people who played the first Walthros and will feature traditional turn-based RPG game play with a variety of selectable difficulty levels.

- Story -

Walthros is a world filled with floating fish, dashing dinosaurs, and suave seals, creatures with culture not so different from our own but in a world conspicuously devoid of human beings. Renewal follows two parallel stories: In the modern day we follow Bob, a Walthrosian Fish working as an excavator at dig sites unearthing old artifacts for his boss, archeologist Dr. Pescado. Bob unearths a piece of machinery that broke off of an ancient vessel thousands of years ago and gives him glimpses into the past where a distant ancestor fights a desperate battle for the survival of his people. Bob's curiosity begins a journey of discovery as he works to find meaning in the origins of life on his world.

- Characters -

Many of the original Walthros characters return, but the playable cast has been cut down from 18 to a more unique set of 10 heroes, each with their own specialization. Some characters are entirely new, and some are very different takes on the existing cast. While there will be a handful of additional, temporary party members and familiar faces playing NPC roles, Renewal's story focuses on this core set of 10. Here are a few of our lead characters:

Bob - Fish. Curious and kind but absent-minded. Bob is an excavator working for archeologist Dr. Pescado. Mostly focused on making ends meet and having a good time, Bob becomes more and more fixated on solving the mysteries of his world after he makes contact with a strange relic. He's the party's healer. Fights using a staff.

Salom - Seal. Close friends with Bob, Salom is a private detective having trouble finding clients lately. Would love to be a singer, but he's not very good at it. Joins up with Bob early in the game. He fights with a lance and can dive on enemies from above. Uses physical attack skills.

Suwanee - Goose. Lives on the fringes of the town of Bayswater. Suwanee is a gothy goose who shows extreme loyalty to her friends and family. She works at a grocery store. Uses knives and is the party's primary debuffer. Can poison enemies.

Amber - Frog. A member of a tribe of swamp witches, Amber kept her town safe during an apocalyptic event by using illusionary magic to hide it from the rest of the world. Uses hexes to cause status effects and summons powerful monsters. Her summon spells have charge times.

- Design -

The game's flow is broken into three acts, with each chapter of the story opening the world up in larger ways. There will be no random encounters and players will be able to save at any time. In the early game, the party will be predetermined by the story, but later on players will be free to build their own parties. There will be a series of extensive side stories to help flesh out each party member and to put together odd pairings of personalities.

While the story has been outlined from start to finish, it has yet to be decided whether the game will feature a traditional world map or something more streamlined.

Graphics, writing, and game design by Paul Harrington. Music by Glock & Mr. 8bit.

Living in the Past

20 years ago I moved on from drawing goofy comics about fish guys and started making games. The project that would become Walthros was my very first one and it's still available free for anyone who wants to see some genuine awkward high school storytelling http://superwalrusland.com/wiki/index.php?title=Walthros

Kaiju Development Continues

Wobble Reviews has been quiet lately as I had been spending more time on game development and preparing for PAX East last weekend, where I presented the first live game play demonstration of Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy. It's been a very fun project! I hope to get back into the swing of things and finish up some game and movie reviews soon.

Until then, be sure to check the official Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy blog for weekly updates and full info!

Announcement: Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy

We're very happy to (re)introduce Kaiju Big Battel: Fighto Fantasy! With graphics by Soda_piggy and music by Glock & mr8bit, this title is a turn-based RPG that brings the giant monsters of Kaiju Big Battel into a 16-bit role playing world along the lines of the SNES Final Fantasy games.

Designed for Kaiju fans and newcomers alike, Fighto Fantasy takes American Beetle, Silver Potato, and more on a quest through time and space as they work to undo damage caused by the evil Dr. Cube, who has begun rampaging through history. With seven main playable heroes (and a secret one to unlock), players explore six time periods and punch out dozens of deadly monsters.

Keep watching the Super Walrus Land Facebook page for more updates! If all goes well, we're aiming for a late 2016/early 2017 release on PC and Mac, with an Android release to follow. We'll need your help with some votes to get the game on Steam once the time's right!

Ghost's Towns Update

Ghost's Towns has been updated! Coming up on the game's one year anniversary next month, we now have some new dialogue that hopefully clarifies some questions, a new NPC, some new shortcuts, and a slight rearrangement of two buildings. Best of all, the run button now works in most places.

Ghost's Towns Final Release Available

I've made some minor edits, color adjustments, bug fixes, and additions to Ghost's Towns since the test release, so now's the time to call it officially complete and release an updated version. Enjoy! An Android port is on the way too.

You awaken in a mysterious town with no identity, no bearings, and an alien body. Ten trials await; complete the trials and find a truth.

Ghost's Towns is a surreal puzzle game set in a world of sad monsters and suspicious strangers. Players complete objectives around town to earn tokens which can be used to activate machines to peer into another world.

The world of Ghost's Towns is inhabited by both new and old faces, featuring cameos from Super Walrus Games titles of the past, including many unreleased games. The idea of the Tower of Truth comes from an unreleased portion of Surlaw Armageddon that was to serve as that game's final chapter. The town functions as a sort of graveyard of ideas.

Ghost's Towns Now Available

I'm still waiting on feedback from testers, but I'm too excited to sit on this any longer: Ghost's Towns is now complete! Consider this an open beta or something. The game is fully, completely playable, though some minor changes or additions may occur later. It's available for free right now on Windows, Mac, and Linux. An Android version will be available at a future date. I'd love to hear any feedback you've got!

Bringing C. Kane to Steam

C. Kane's Steam Greenlight page is up! Please check it out and give it the old Thumbs Up so we can spread love, joy, and sharks to a whole new audience.

This week I should finish work on and release Ghost's Towns and then it's time to work on the updated version of Kane. A new optional area and some new NPCs are being added. Now's the perfect time to hype it up for Steam!

Super Walrus Games now on Android

Thanks to some tireless work by James Paige and the OHRRPGCE crew, the game engine I've been using since 1998 can finally run on Android phones and tablets. I've already promoted C. Kane here, but I'm happy to announce that I've also ported Horse Game as a free download and my original RPG Walthros, first released as a demo in 2000 and completed in 2002, as a 99 cent game. Walthros definitely shows its age in both writing and gameplay, but I'm still proud of it and all of its pitfalls and hiccups helped make me who I am today as a game designer. I appreciate any downloads they can get!

Click the links below or just run a search for Super Walrus Games on the Google Play store.

C. Kane - A short form turn-based RPG that streamlines the genre to its basics; fighting monsters, talking to people, playing dress up. Dungeons are minimalist, graphics are monochrome. Random battles are no more, bosses are numerous. A Shark guides the way. An original hip hop soundtrack provides the beats. At last, The Citizen Game of Video Games is here.

Walthros - Everyone's lived the old RPG standard of gathering crystals and fighting mysterious monsters, but have you ever done it... as a fish? Bob Surlaw and a whole host of mutants embark on a quest to save the world.

Horse Game - In this game you must find the horse. Hello! I am your host. I am Surlaw. I watch you as you play the Horse Game and make sure you do not get out of control. Control is the most important part of the plan. Control and obedience.

C. Kane - One week later

It's been a little over a week since I released the PC/Mac/Linux versions of C. Kane and I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out. The game's had two reviews: One satirical review by one of its playtesters, and another review on Slime Salad focusing more on why the gameplay works. All this led to an article appearing on Kotaku, entitled This is Actually the Citizen Kane of Games, that brought in a couple thousand views to the game's page and a couple hundred downloads.

After a little bit of editing for text box positioning and other minor things, the game is now available for Android devices from the Google Play store. It plays pretty well with a virtual d-pad and buttons and the picture fits very nicely on my phone! If you want to support C. Kane and other games like it, please buy the Android version, even if you played the PC one already. It's only 99 cents! And please leave ratings/reviews.

I'm going to work on converting some of my older releases to Android in the near future. Horse Game's up next, after a few edits. I know that one's only ten minutes long, so don't worry, I won't be charging anything for it.

Game Release - C. Kane

My newest game is 100% done, pending any bugs or balance issues the public finds. Windows, Mac, and Linux versions are available for download here: http://superwalrusland.com/wiki/index.php?title=C._Kane

A complete, illustrated manual explaining the game's characters and setting is available here
: http://superwalrusland.com/CKaneManual.pdf

8bit and Glock did a really great job with the music and the playtesters did an awesome job catching little things I would have otherwise missed. I'm sure there are still one or two little issues that are going to crop up, so if you run into anything weird, let us know!

C. Kane Beta Test

My newest game is almost complete, so it's time to recruit some outside testers. C. Kane is a short form RPG intended to finally be The Citizen Kane of Gaming. Featuring an original hip hop soundtrack by Mr. 8bit and Glock, minimalist grayscale environments, and goofy monsters, C. Kane is a 2D Japanese-style RPG that simplifies the genre to its core elements; fighting bosses, learning new spells, and engaging in absurdly self-important dialogue.

If you'd like to test, please take notes on everything as you go. Which jokes work, which skills need to be rebalanced, which Moral Choices you made, whether any equipment seems useless or overpowered. If you don't like turn based 2D RPGs, you're probably not going to have fun here.

Send me an e-mail or a private message and I'll send you the download link as soon as it's ready, which should be Friday night (August 30th) if all goes according to plan.
